Most people chase wealth for wealth’s sake. A bigger house. A nicer car. A higher number in the bank account.
And there’s nothing inherently wrong with wanting those things. But here’s what I’ve discovered after two decades of building businesses and coaching leaders: the people who build truly lasting, generational wealth are the ones who tie their financial ambitions to something bigger than themselves.
They’ve discovered their “Big Why.”
When I walked away from the incredible opportunity to oversee 10 retail stores, people thought I was crazy. On paper, it made no sense. But I had discovered something more powerful than a paycheck—I had discovered my purpose.
That purpose didn’t make me less wealthy. It made me wealthier in every way that matters.
What Is Purpose-Driven Wealth?
Purpose-driven wealth is the intentional pursuit of financial success that’s rooted in and directed by your deeper life purpose.
Traditional wealth building: Make as much money as possible. Figure out what to do with it later.
Purpose-driven wealth building: Define what matters most. Build wealth that serves and amplifies that purpose.
The difference isn’t just philosophical—it’s practical. Purpose-driven wealth builders are:
- More resilient during downturns (purpose sustains you when profits don’t)
- More innovative (purpose drives creative problem-solving)
- More attractive to talent (people want to work for something meaningful)
- More generous (giving becomes natural, not obligatory)
- More fulfilled (success feels meaningful, not empty)
Finding Your ‘Big Why’
Your Big Why is the intersection of three things:
- What breaks your heart — What injustice, problem, or need moves you deeply?
- What makes you come alive — What activities make you lose track of time?
- What you’re uniquely equipped to do — What combination of skills, experiences, and perspective do only you have?
For me, it was seeing leaders struggling to find their purpose while sitting on incredible potential. My experience transitioning from hospitality to retail to real estate—combined with my journey from Kenya to America—gave me a unique perspective on transformation.
Your exercise: Write one paragraph answering all three questions. Your Big Why lives where those answers overlap.
The 5 Principles of Purpose-Driven Wealth
Principle 1: Wealth Is a Tool, Not a Goal
Money is fuel. Purpose is the destination. When you flip the script—using wealth to serve purpose rather than pursuing wealth as the purpose—everything changes.
Principle 2: Generosity Creates Abundance
The leaders I’ve coached who are most financially successful are consistently the most generous. They give their time, expertise, and resources freely—and somehow, abundance follows.
Principle 3: Impact and Income Are Not Opposites
You don’t have to choose between making money and making a difference. The best businesses solve real problems for real people—and get compensated handsomely for it.
Principle 4: Generational Wealth Requires Generational Purpose
Money without purpose dissipates within generations. But when you build wealth WITH purpose, you pass down both the resources and the reason to steward them.
Principle 5: Your Story Is Your Superpower
Every struggle, setback, and triumph in your life has prepared you for purpose-driven wealth. Your unique story gives you credibility, empathy, and perspective that no MBA can provide.
Building Purpose-Driven Wealth: A Practical Framework
Step 1: Define Your Purpose Clearly
Write it down. Refine it. Share it with people who know you well and ask for feedback.
Step 2: Audit Your Current Financial Activities
Does your work align with your purpose? Are your investments reflecting your values? Is your spending supporting or undermining your mission?
Step 3: Create a Purpose-Aligned Business Model
Design your business or career around your purpose. What products or services naturally emerge from your Big Why?
Step 4: Build Your Wealth Team
Surround yourself with financial advisors, mentors, and peers who understand purpose-driven wealth. Not everyone will get it—find those who do.
Step 5: Give While You Grow
Don’t wait until you’re “rich enough” to start being generous. Start now. Give your time, expertise, and whatever resources you can.
Conclusion: Your Wealth Is Your Legacy
I didn’t build a multi-million-dollar franchise by chasing money. I built it by chasing purpose—and the money followed.
Your Big Why is waiting. Your purpose-driven wealth journey starts the moment you decide that success means more than a number. It means impact. It means legacy. It means transforming lives locally to change lives globally.
That’s not just wealth. That’s a life well-lived.
